니콜로 마키아벨리(Niccolo Machiavelli)

피렌체 공화국의 정치학자 겸 사상가(1469~1527) : 니콜로 디 베르나르도 데이 마키아벨리(Niccolo di Bernardo dei Machiavelli), 일명 니콜로 마키아벨리(Niccolo Machiavelli)는 르네상스 시대 이탈리아 피렌체의 외교관이자 철학자로, 그의 정치 철학을 담은 군주론(The Prince)(1532)으로 잘 알려진 정치학자 겸 사상가입니다. 마키아벨리는 1469년 변호사 베르나르도 디 니콜로 마키아벨리(Bernardo di Niccolo Machiavelli)와 바르톨로메아 데 스테파노 넬리(Bartolomea di Stefano Nelli)의 셋째이자 장남으로 이탈리아의 ‘꽃의 도시’ 피렌체에서 태어났습니다.

‘피렌체는 곧 메디치’라고 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로, 피렌체의 역사를 설명함에 있어서 메디치가를 빼놓을 수 없을 것입니다. 그러나, 백일 붉은 꽃은 없는 법! 메디치가는 1492년 ‘위대한 로렌초’라 불리는 로렌초 데 메디치(Lorenzo de' Medici)의 사망과 함께 서서히 기울어지기 시작합니다. 1494년 무능한 장남 그의 장남 피에로 디 로렌초 데 메디치에 실망한 피렌체는 메디치가를 추방하였으며, 이제 ‘메디치의 피렌체’가 아닌, ‘피렌체 공화국(Florentine Republic)’으로의 체질개선을 시작합니다.

잠시나마 피렌체를 집권한 수도사 사보나롤라(Girolamo Savonarola)가 1498년 교수형에 이은 화형으로 몰락하였고, 마키아벨리는 화형식이 거행되고, 혼란에 빠진 피렌체 공화국(Florentine Republic)의 제2서기관(Second Chancery)으로 발탁되어 공직을 수행하였습니다. 1512년까지 15년간 피렌체 공화국의 공무원으로 종사하며 피렌체의 내정 뿐 아니라, 유럽 전역을 누비는 외교관으로 맹활약하였으며 당시의 경험은 훗날 그가 전술론(Art of War)(1521), 군주론(The Prince)(1532) 등 역사와 정치를 넘나드는 필력의 자양분이 되었습니다. 1509년 마키아벨리는 프랑스 샤를 8세(Charles VIII)가 점령한 피사(Pisa)를, 수년전부터 자신이 직접 지휘한 민병대로 수복하는데 성공합니다. 그러나, 그의 영광은 불과 3년 후 1512년 교황 율리우스 2세(Pope Julius II)의 지지와 함께 메디치가가 피렌체로 복귀하면서 끝나게 됩니다.

마키아벨리는 감히 메디치가에 반한 혐의로 공직에서 쫓겨 났을 뿐 아니라, 이듬해에는 악랄한 고문에 처해졌습니다. 그러나! 메디치 가문의 조반니 디 로렌초 데 메디치(Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici)가 메디치 가 최초의 교황, 교황 레오 10세(Papa Leone X)로 취임하는 경사와 맞물려, 기적적으로 특별사면을 통해 목숨을 건질 수 있었으나, 죽기 전까지 그가 염원하는 공직으로의 복귀는 이루어지지 않았습니다. 그러나, 공직에서 쫓겨나 시간적으로 한가해진 덕분에 피렌체 외곽의 저택에서 칩거하며 글을 썼고, 후대에 그의 이름을 세상에 알린 저서를 잇달아 발표하였으니 인생이란 참으로 알 수 없습니다.

영원한 피렌체人 니콜로 마키아벨리(Niccolo Machiavelli) : 니콜로 마키아벨리(Niccolo Machiavelli)는 이탈리아인이기 이전에 ‘피렌체인’으로 피렌체 곳곳에 그의 흔적이 현재까지도 잘 남아 았습니다. 특히 고향인 피렌체를 누구보다 사랑하는 인물로, 피렌체사(Istorie Fiorentine)(1532)를 집필한 바 있습니다. 여행자에게 피렌체는 미켈란젤로를 비롯한 예술가와 일본영화 냉정과 열정 사이(Between Calm and Passion)(2001)의 배경 등이 떠오르지만, 문학기행자에게는 ‘마키아벨리의 도시’이자 ‘군주론의 고향’으로도 손색이 없지요! 니콜로 마키아벨리(Niccolo Machiavelli)가 근무하던 시뇨리아 궁은 현재 베키오궁(Palazzo Vecchio)으로 불립니다. 시뇨리아의 흔적은 궁과 맞닿아 있는 시뇨리아 광장(Piazza della Signoria)에 남아 있습니다. 피렌체 여행자라면 한번쯤 방문하는 ‘시계탑 광장’이죠!

군주론을 집필한 빌라 마키아벨리(Villa Machiavelli) : 피렌체공화정 제2서기관(1498~1512)으로 종사하던 니콜로 마키아벨리(Niccolo Machiavelli)는 공직에서 쫓겨나 피렌체 아르노 강(Arno) 건너 남서쪽에 집을 구하였습니다. 피렌체가 한눈에 들어오는 언덕 위의 저택 빌라 마키아벨리(Villa Machiavelli)에서 마키아벨리는 언젠가 복귀를 꿈꾸며, 훗날 자신의 이름을 세계에 알린 걸작을 연달아 집필하였습니다. 현재는 지하에 포도주 창고를 갖춘 토스카나 음식점으로 운영 중.

산타 크로체 성당(Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence) : 마키아벨리는 1527년, 58세의 나이로 산타 크로체 성당(Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence)에서 영면에 들었습니다. 산타 크로체 성당은 피렌체를 대표하는 당대의 명사들이 잠든 곳으로 무려 갈릴레오, 미켈란젤로, 단테 그리고 마키아벨리를 한 번에 만날 수 있는 공간입니다. 묘비명은 다음과 같습니다. TANTO NOMINI NULLUM PAR ELOGIUM 그 어떤 찬사도 이토록 위대한 인물을 찬양하는데 적합하지 않으리오.
