Xenophon was a man of great modesty, and as handsome as can be imagined. They say that Socrates met him in a narrow lane, and put his stick across it, and prevented him from passing by, asking where all kinds of necessary things were sold. And when Xenophon had answered him, he asked, again, where men were made good and virtuous. And as Xenophon did not know, Socrates said, "Follow me, then and learn." And from that time forth Xenophon became a follower of Socrates.

크세노폰은 매우 겸손하며 상상할 수 없을만큼 잘생긴 사람이었다. 전하는 바에 의하면 소크라테스가 좁은길에서 크세노폰과 마주치자 지팡이로 길을 막고 그를 지나가지 못하게 한 다음, 어딜 가야 필수품들을 살 수 있는지를 물었다. 크세노폰이 대답하자, 남자는 어딜 가야 훌륭해지고 덕망이 높아질 수 있는지 소크라테스가 되물었다. 크세노폰이 대답하지 못하자, 소크라테스는 "나를 따르며 배우시오." 라고 말했다고 한다. 그 후로 크세노폰은 소크라테스의 제자가 되었다.
