For Every Heart Made Lonely by Love
Jeong Ho-seung’s Poetry Comes to You in English Love and loneliness run through Jeong Ho-seung’s selected poetry collection To Daffodils. Love makes us aware of our solitude and, ultimately, helps us move beyond it. Poems that sing of love as an inescapable part of being human have now been brought together in English under the title To Daffodils: Selected Love Poems. This illustrated collection pairs translations by Brother Anthony of Taizé, the translator of Korean poetry and former professor of English at Sogang University, with paintings by Park Hang-ryul. The title poem, “To Daffodils,” begins, “Do not cry / To be lonely is to be human.” One of Jeong’s best-known poems, it has offered comfort to readers for many years. Often called Korea’s “national poet,” Jeong now meets English-language readers through his fourth collection in translation. Following A Letter Not Sent, Though Flowers Fall, I Have Never Forgotten You, and Seeking You, this volume explores his poetic world through the theme of love. Jeong challenges the familiar notion that love poems are necessarily romantic and sweet. His poems can be anguished, even searing: “Love until you die” (“Longing for Buseok-sa Temple”); “only one who has wept a lifetime,/ bowed low upon the Korean Peninsula, would understand.” (“My Path”); “When I went to Nakhwa-am cliff with you, / why couldn’t I fall, holding your hand, and become the White Horse River?” (“Regrets”). These lines carry profound longing and deep remorse. Love leads us toward maturity, but the journey is never easy. Jeong’s poetry looks unflinchingly at the pain and loneliness encountered along the way. In his preface, the poet writes, “If one poem in this book could someday sit, even briefly, beside someone made lonely by loving, that alone would bring me joy.” Through the translations of Brother Anthony, who has translated more than sixty volumes of Korean poetry into English, Jeong’s language of universal human feeling reaches readers around the world. Love and loneliness, longing and remorse cross linguistic boundaries to touch the reader’s heart. Fifty-seven paintings by Park Hang-ryul deepen the poems’ resonance. Rendered in soft pastel hues, his graceful women, birds, and flowers evoke the lyrical beauty of traditional Korean art, with the birds and flowers recalling Korea’s bird-and-flower painting tradition. |
