1812년 2월 7일 영국 포츠머드 근교에서 태어났다. 의회 출입기자 생활을 거쳐 작가로 입문하여 당시의 사회 문제들을 깊이 있게 비판하는 작품들을 썼다. 또한 당대 최고의 소설가라는 평가를 받으며 상업적으로도 크게 성공했다. 초기작 『피크윅 문서』, 『올리버 트위스트』, 『니콜라스 니클비』 등에서 엿보인 대중성과 예술성의 독특한 결합은 『돔비부자 상사』 이후 더욱 심화된 사회의식으로 발전하여, 『힘든 시절』, 『막내 도릿』, 『위대한 유산』 등의 탁월한 고전으로 이어진다.

1843년 12월에 디킨스는 『크리스마스 캐롤』을 출간하여 미국에서 선풍적인 인기를 얻었다. 사회 비판적인 성격의 소설만을 써오던 디킨스는 1859년 역사소설로 돌아서 『두 도시 이야기』(A Tale of Two Cities)를 출간했다. 소설 외에도 '매일 쓰는 말들' 등의 잡지를 직접 편집하기도 한 그는 『에드윈 드루드의 비밀』을 집필하던 중 별세하여 현재 웨스터민스터 사원에 묻혀 있다.

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Landport, Portsea, England. He died in Kent on June 9, 1870. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know not only hunger and privation,but also the horror of the infamous debtors’ prison and the evils of child labor. A turn of fortune in the shape of a legacy brought release from the nightmare of prison and “slave” factories and afforded Dickens the opportunity of two years’ formal schooling at Wellington House Academy. He worked as an attorney’s clerk and newspaper reporter until his Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Pickwick Papers (1837) brought him the amazing and instant success that was to be his for the remainder of his life. In later years, the pressure of serial writing, editorial duties, lectures, and social commitments led to his separation from Catherine Hogarth after twenty-three years of marriage. It also hastened his death at the age of fifty-eight, when he was characteristically engaged in a multitude of work.
