재즈, 아는 만큼 들릴까?
많은 평론가나 애호가는 “음악을 애써 공부할 필요는 없다. 들어서 좋으면 그만이다”라고 말한다. 그런 견해에 충분히 수긍할 수 있는 것은 사전에 어떠한 정보가 없더라도 어떤 음악에 깊숙이 빠져들었던 경험 때문이다. 그것은 감성적인 부분에서 한없이 맞는 말이다. 하지만 음악을 반복해서 더 듣거나, 감성적인 호소가 잘 되지 않을 때 이성적인 접근이 필요하다. 좋아하는 뮤지션이 도덕성이 파괴되었을 때 우리는 그 음악마저 버린다. 물론 그 반대의 경우, 즉 훌륭한 인품을 알아보곤 그 음악마저 좋아할 수 있다. 스탠리 조던이 음악 치료에 관심을 두고 있다는 문장을 읽고 스탠리 조던의 음악을 듣는다면 기묘하지만, 악기 소리가 다르게 들릴 수 있다. 허비 행콕의 『Cantaloupe Island』의 번잡한 소음과 리듬감의 관계를 연상하면서 음악을 듣는다면 어떤 시대를 생각하면서 재즈의 맛을 조금은 더 실감할 수 있다. 음악과 메시지는 명확할 수 없지만, 결코 분리될 수 없다. 이 책을 곱씹어 읽어야 하는 수고는 그래서 필요하다. 재즈의 미래를 짐작하게 만드는 리스트 80년대 이후의 재즈는 아예 회피하는 사람들이 제법 있다. 최초 음반 선정 때 출판사는 회피의 대상이 된 음반을 언급하지 못했다. 나중에 저자는 그런 음반을 선택해서 다루어 주었다. 명반 리스트는 어떻게 선정한다고 하더라도 모두 공감할 수 있는 백 퍼센트 보편성을 달성할 수 없는 것이며, 설사 동의를 기반으로 한다고 해서 저자가 부여한 음반의 가치가 공유될 리 만무했다. 그런 까닭에 당연히 리스트를 만드는 것 자체가 목적은 아니었다. 이 책에서 선정한 올 타임 재즈 명반의 리뷰를 읽고 재즈와 함께 들으면서 저자가 음악을 대하는 진지한 태도가 전달되면 좋겠다. 그리고 과거의 음악과 현재의 음악이 단절되지 않았다는 견해에 주목할 이유는 충분하다. 책을 읽을 때 독자가 아는 음반만 먼저 찾지 말고, 잘 모르거나 다가오지 않았던 낯선 음반에 관심을 두고 음악을 듣는 방법을 추천한다. 과거와 현재, 명반과 새로운 음반이 유기적으로 결합한 사실을 깨닫는다면, 책을 읽고 음악을 듣는 즐거움은 배가 될 것이다. |

저자와의 만남은 30년도 훨씬 전인 1980년대 말경부터였던 듯하다. 당시 그는 신문 기자로 재즈를 취재하기 위해 나와 연을 맺었다. 연주를, 취재를 위해 일본에 참 많이도 함께 오가면서 재즈에 대한 그의 애정을 누구보다 더 이해한다고 나는 자부한다. 각설하고 저자의 『재즈재즈』와 이 책을 함께 읽어 볼 수 있다면 ‘재즈에 대한 접근’이 얼마나 진지하고 심도 있는지 알 수 있을 것이다.
재즈의 명반을 소개하는 책이다. 앞에서도 적었듯이 저자가 재즈를 마주하는 방식을 보라는 것이다. 귀에 착착 감기는? 달달한? 분위기를 만들어주는?… 그런 식상한 접근 방식에 앞서 꼭 들어보아야 할 전통 속의 명반, 현대 재즈의 명반, 미래를 예측해주는 명반들을 소개하고 있다. 진정한 재즈 애호가라면 읽어보시기를. - 이정식 (색소폰 연주자) |

독일과 미국에서의 긴 유학 생활을 마치고 갓 귀국을 하여, 한창 연주 활동을 하던 때였다. 30년 넘게 피아노를 쳐 오면서, 나는 클래식 연주자와 문헌들은 물론 다양한 음악의 즐거움을 다 알고 있다고 자부했었다. 그런데 그런 내가 딱해 보였는지 어느 날, 메일로 온 한 뭉치의 재즈 음반들은 내 음악적 영감에 새로운 스펙트럼을 열어주었다. 마치 새로운 피를 수혈받는 느낌이었달까? 키스 자렛, 실로니어스 몽크, 오스카 피터슨의 주옥같은 음반들은 매우 직관적이어서 말로 느낌을 설명하기가 너무 오묘했다. 그럼에도 이렇게 생동감 있는 언어로, 그들의 음악을 깊이 있게 풀어낸 이 책에 경의와 존경, 무한한 애정을 표한다. - 최영미 (피아니스트)
