멍하니 서서 새가 몰고 온 작은 파문과 고요의 회복을 지켜보던 그는 지금 무언가 자신의 내부에서 엄청난 것이 살짝 벌어졌다 다물렸다는 걸 깨달았다. (……) 그게 무엇인지 알 수 없지만 그에게 왔던 것은 이미 사라져버렸고 다시 반복되지 않을 것이고 영영 지울 수도 없으리라고 그는 침울하게 생각했다. 단 한 번이라니…… 단 한 번이었다니…… 다영도 이곳에서 이런 무섭도록 강렬한 한 번을 경험한 것일까.

우리 마음속에 애초에 생겨났던 것이 없어지는 건 불가능하다. 깨뜨린다고 해서 사라지지도 않는다. 파편과 잔해가 남을 뿐이다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고, 있던 것의 그 날카로운 모서리, 울퉁불퉁한 단면을 사포질하고 궁글리는 정도는 가능하지 않을까 싶다. 이 작품에서 나는 그런 작은 시도를 하는 아버지와 딸을 다루고자 했다. 물론 그들은 성공하지 못했으리라. 이 작품은 신화가 아니라 소설이니까. 그러나 그들이 실패한 것도 아니리라. 소설은 끝났지만 그들의 삶은 끝나지 않았으니까.
It is impossible for what has already come into being in our hearts to disappear. And breaking it up cannot make it vanish either, since it remains in the form of debris. Nevertheless, I believe the sharp and rough edges of strong emotions can be smoothed and made less jagged. In this story, I intended to depict a father and his daughter who try to make an attempt at minor changes in their relationship. Of course, they may not have succeeded in their attempt?it is because this is not a myth but a work of fiction. On the other hand, they may not have failed either?because even when a story comes to an end, the characters’ lives are not over.

소설은 아내의 죽음 후 더 소원해진 부녀의 관계를 짧은 봄날의 시간 안에서 보여주면서 ‘이해와 오해’ 혹은 ‘근본적 무지(無知)’의 영역에 얽힌 인간사의 오랜 이야기 속으로 합류하는데, 여기서 문제는 그 영역 속으로 한발 한발 진입하는 권여선 소설의 예민한 촉수와 리듬, 문체의 미묘한 힘이 아닌가 한다.
By depicting a couple of short spring days, the story reveals the father’s awkward relationship with his daughter, which has become aggravated after his wife’s death. The story thus joins the long tradition of human dramas that originate from somewhere in-between understanding and misunderstanding, from the fundamentally unknowable. Here the writer’s sensitiveness and narrative rhythm and style shine, enabling the story to take one step after another into the realm of those dramas.
