저자 소개

허먼 멜빌 (Herman Melville)
1819~1891. 미국의 소설가. 뉴욕 출생.
은행 사환, 농장일, 학교 교사 등 여러 직업을 전전하다 20세에 상선의 선원이 되어 영국 리버풀까지 항해했고, 22세에는 포경선의 선원이 되어 남태평양에 나갔다. 1846년 포경선에서 탈주하여 남태평양의 마르키즈제도의 식인마을에 살았던 경험을 그린 <타이피 족 Typee>(1846)을 발표하며 작가생활을 시작하였다. 이후 리버풀을 왕복하는 상선생활을 그린 <레드번 Redburn>(1849), 군함생활을 그린 <하얀 재킷 White Jacket>(1850)을 발표하였다. 대표작에 인간 본성의 악(惡)과 숙명 그리고 자유의지 등의 문제를 철학적으로 고찰한 작품 <백경 Moby Dick: or, the White Whale>(1851)이 있으며, 그 외 저서에 <빌리 버드 Billy Budd>(1824) <필경사, 바틀비 Bartleby, the Scrivener>(1853) <베니토 세레노 선장 Benito Cereno>(1856) <사기꾼 The Confidence Man>(1857) 등이 있다.
