1946년 강원도 양양에서 태어났으며 방송통신대학교 국문과를 마치고 강원대학교 대학원 철학과 박사과정을 수료했다. 1972년 강원일보 신춘문예에 당선되고, 1976년 [심상]에 「겨울 추상화」를 발표하며 등단했다. 1999년 제1회 백석문학상과 제9회 민족예술상, 제2회 강원민족예술상을 수상, 이후 2003년 제1회 유심작품상, 2011년 제6회 불교문예작품상, 2012년 제24회 정지용문학상, 2012년 올해의 시, 제1회 강원문화예술상, 2013년 제2회 박재삼문학상, 2014년 제19회 현대불교문학상을 수상했다. 한국작가회의 부이사장, 강원민예총, 강원작가회의 지회장, 만해

These two emotional wheels carry two loves. One love is formed from the natural sense of community that rises from the belief that all life on this earth is one.
