Tobias Smollett (March 19, 1721 ? September 17, 1771) was a Scottish novelist, poet, translator, and surgeon who held a significant place in 18th-century English literature. Renowned as a master of the picaresque novel, his notable works include The Adventures of Roderick Random, The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle, and The Expedition of Humphry Clinker. Smollett studied medicine at the University of Glasgow and served as a naval surgeon, with assignments in Jamaica. These experiences lent a vivid realism to his writings. Additionally, he made substantial contributions to English literature by translating Cervantes' Don Quixote into English.
Smollett's novels often serve as social satires set against maritime and terrestrial backdrops, sharply critiquing the hypocrisy and pretensions of the military and upper classes. His medical background informed his narratives, enriching them with authentic details. His works significantly influenced the development of the English novel, inspiring later authors such as Charles Dickens.
